Local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) refers to the process of optimizing a website or online presence to enhance its visibility in local search results. This is particularly important for businesses that serve a specific geographic area or have physical locations. The goal of local SEO is to ensure that a business appears in relevant local searches, such as “near me” searches, and attracts local customers. In some cases, I have also started to see more people search with zip and area codes to help target their local searches.  Here are some key tactics to help improve your website’s ranking in local and “near me” searches:

1. Optimize Google My Business (GMB) Listing:

  • Claim and verify your Google My Business listing. Ensure that your business name, address, and phone number (NAP) information is accurate and consistent across all online platforms. Google will send a post card to your business address to verify that you are in fact the owner and at said location. You will have to login into Google My Business and verify ownership.

2. Complete GMB Profile:

  • Fill out all relevant information on your GMB profile, including business hours, categories, services, and a compelling business description. Add high-quality photos of your business and products. I also recommend using keyword in your business name as well as getting as many 5 start reviews. This will help your Google My Business rank better.

3. Get Customer Reviews:

  • Encourage satisfied customers to leave positive reviews on your GMB listing. Respond to reviews, both positive and negative, to demonstrate your commitment to customer satisfaction. This is also a great way to show Google that you are an active member in the Google community. The more interaction and more content you have the better you will do.

4. Local Keyword Optimization:

  • Incorporate location-based keywords naturally into your website content, meta tags, and headings. Focus on terms that locals are likely to use in search queries. Like mentioned before be sure to include keywords in your business name

5. On-Page SEO:

  • Optimize your website’s meta titles, meta descriptions, and content with a local focus. Include your location in title tags and meta descriptions to increase relevance for local searches. One trend I have seen recently is people searching with “near me” or even the neighborhood of zip code that a located in. You should also be sure to include location and city name in your title tags. This is a title tag best practice as it will help Google rank the page better for that specific location.

6. Local Citations:

  • Ensure consistent NAP information across online directories, local business listings, and citation sites. This consistency builds trust with search engines and improves local search rankings.

7. Local Link Building:

  • Build local links by partnering with other businesses in your area, joining local business associations, and getting featured in local publications. Local backlinks enhance your website’s authority for local searches.

8. Mobile Optimization:

  • Ensure your website is mobile-friendly, as many local searches occur on mobile devices. Google gives preference to mobile-optimized sites in local search results.

9. Create Location Pages:

  • This is a key part for any business. If your business serves multiple locations, create individual location pages on your website. Each page should include specific information about the location, such as address, phone number, and unique content. You should have a local page for each city you are trying to rank for.
  • Case Examples – Cannabis Delivery – I worked with a cannabis delivery company and we created local pages for each city and neighborhood they wanted to rank for. We even took it a step further made these local pages look and feel like the homepage. Users were able to buy and interact with the website just like if they came to the homepage.

10. Use Local Schema Markup:

  • Implement local schema markup on your website to provide search engines with additional information about your business, such as operating hours, reviews, and specific services. This is a little more advanced and might require a developer. But some websites like WordPress offer Schema Markup templates.

11. Local Content Creation:

  • Develop content that is relevant to your local audience. This could include blog posts, articles, or resources that address local concerns, events, or news.

12. Monitor Local SEO Performance:

  • By implementing these local SEO tactics, you can enhance your website’s visibility in local search results, improve your chances of appearing in “near me” searches, and attract more local customers to your business. Consistency, accuracy, and relevance are key principles in local SEO, so be thorough in optimizing both your online presence and offline information.
